Audience targeting lets a nudge show up for certain kinds of visitors instead of everyone, so the right prompt reaches the right shopper.
A nudge is a proactive prompt that appears near the chat bubble to invite a shopper into the assistant. With audience targeting, you can aim a nudge at visitors who match specific signals detected in the shopper's browser, such as:
- New vs. returning visitor
- Logged-in vs. anonymous
- How recently they last visited
- Frequent visitors
- Whether they already have items in their cart
- Mobile vs. desktop
You can select more than one audience for a nudge. A visitor who matches any of the selected audiences qualifies to see it.
These signals are based on the shopper's browsing behavior in their current session. This version does not use Shopify Customer Segments.
Which nudges support audience targeting
Audience targeting is available for most nudges. A few work differently because their trigger already defines who they're for:
- Product Questions and Exit Intent don't use audience targeting — they fire on a specific moment (viewing a product, or moving to leave) rather than a visitor type.
- Low Stock Urgency offers only partial audience options.
For these nudges, you simply turn them on or off; the rest you can also tailor by audience.
