How and When to Sell, Upsell and Cross-Sell

Customer support isn’t just about solving problems—it’s about creating opportunities. When done right, a well-timed upsell or cross-sell feels like help, not a pitch.

This guide will help you know when to introduce upgrades and how to do it with confidence, clarity, and care.

🎯 The Golden Rule: Help First, Then Sell!

Sales in support should never feel forced. You earn the right to sell after you’ve delivered value—that means identifying the user’s pain point, solving it, and then recommending a solution that improves their results.

✅ A good upsell feels like: "This plan will save you time, remove limits, and help you grow."

❌ A bad upsell feels like: "Buy this just because it exists."

1. After Resolving a Problem

Once you've helped the user and they’re happy, this is your perfect window. A Sale can also be considered interchangeably with Upsell situations and by highlighting how the higher tier feature can help the user succeed.

Example: “Glad I could fix it! Since you're getting more submissions lately, have you considered upgrading to unlock more responses and features? (advanced elements, control and customization, integrations, removal of the POWR branding...)

I'd be happy to apply a 40% discount to help you get started, do you want me to apply the offer and walk you through the upgrade?”

2. The User Hits a Limit or Mentions Frustration

If they’re running into app restrictions or are expressing that something isn't flexible enough—highlight the value of a paid plan or higher tier.

Example: “You’re currently on the Starter plan, which limits your locations on the Map to only 10.

Would you be interested in upgrading to Pro plan and unlock access to 50 locations limit, with the ability to bulk upload them if I apply an exclusive 40% discount to the account for you?”

3. The User Asks for Features That Are Paid-Only

If a user asks for something that’s only available on paid plans (like branding removal, more submissions or elements, integrations, etc.), this is your moment!

Example: “That feature is available on the Pro plan and up. I totally understand if this wasn’t something you were planning for, but I'd be happy to apply a 40% discount to help you get started. This offer is available only if you upgrade today.

Would you like me to guide you through the process? It only takes a minute!”

4. Cross-sell: After a Review

Right after confirming the review, it's the best time to recommend 2 complimentary apps according to their objectives, and highlight those apps as enablers of their growth.

Remember that they're already satisfied, they paid an upgrade before and trust you, so they are now more receptive to suggestions.

Example: “That is so considerate ot you... Since your store is already getting great traffic with the Form, adding a Countdown Timer and Social Feed could really help build trust and boost conversions.

To show our appreciation for your review, I'd love to offer you an exclusive bundle of up to 100% discount: 50% off the Social Feed + Full Access to the Countdown Timer for FREE.

Do you want me to set it up for you?”

💡 Tip: Check the user’s app list in TSH to avoid duplicate suggestions.

📢 How to Sell Authentically (Without Sounding Pushy)

  • 🧩 Tie the Offer to Their Goals or Problem

Don’t just say what the feature does. Say how it helps them specifically.

  • 🎥 Offer to Show or Do It For Them

Show confidence in the product. Offer to walk them through the upgrade and/or do the configuration for them post-upgrade.

  • ⭐ Always Ask for a Review, even if they're not ready to upgrade

If it’s not the right time to sell, don’t miss the chance to request a review. That’s still a valuable win and reward counting for your KPIs!
