Shopify & BigCommerce: Free Trial vs. Freemium
Free Trial Experiment:
Historically, we have always offered POWr as a Freemium product. This means, there has always been a free version of all of our apps that was fully functional and could be used in a free version forever.
In November 2017, we started experimenting with offering a "Free Trial" only for some of our apps in Shopify.
- Users would start with a Pro trial of the selected app.
- After saving their app, they would be presented with a pricing table that lists Premium, Pro and Business (no Free) as available plans.
- Without upgrading, the users cannot get past this paywall and cannot install their app on the site.

We soon realized that this drives up our revenue a lot for some apps. However, the install volume was so much lower for some apps, that even the significantly increased conversion rate could not make up for that.
We, therefore, disabled the Free Trial flow for some apps and kept it only for the ones where it made us more money.
In April 2018, we started making some of our apps on BigCommerce "Free Trial" only.
